Social Media Reacts to Ariana Grande Remaking 'The Boy Is Mine'
Ariana Grande is set to release her latest album “Eternal Sunshine” on (March 8), and she revealed that a reimagined version of Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” is on the LP.
During an appearance on “The Zach Sang Show in February, the Grammy Award-winner shared her fondness for the classic song, describing it as a “bad girl anthem,” and her attempt to reimagine it.
“I’ve always wanted to re-imagine [‘The Boy Is Mine’] in some kind of way… In a way, I was kind of like, ‘This is a very bad idea.’ But there is a large group of my fans that really do love a bad girl anthem, and this is an elevated version of that,” Grande said.
As expected, social media users were quick to share their thoughts on Grande’s decision to remake the song.
One user warned that Grande better bring it on her version because Brandy and Monica’s is an undisputed classic.
“The Boy Is Mine’ is a classic hit. Ariana Grande better not disappoint with her version of this song,” the user wrote.
Another user loved Grande’s reworking of the song, “I’m actually so glad Ariana’s version of “The Boy Is Mine” doesn’t sample Brandy and Monica’s and is an original song… I just know that the collapse this song is going to cause will be INSANE.”
Because of Grande’s version, one user is frustrated that many are just now discovering the classic.
“Why so many arianators just now discovering Brandy & Monica’s ‘The Boy Is Mine,” the user wrote.
While many are divided on Grande’s reinterpretation, Monica hoped that the song would not be covered.
“If someone does something with it, I prefer that they make it their own and do something totally different, but I feel like what she and I did is sacred,” she said in an interview with Hollywood Reporter.
Inspired by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's 1982 duet "The Girl Is Mine" and released in 1998, “The Boy Is Mine” has become a signature song for Brandy and Monica throughout their storied careers.
Produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Brandy, and Dallas Austin, the track was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks.
