This Day in Black History: Nov. 26, 1968

USC running back O.J. Simpson awarded the Heisman Trophy.

O.J. Simpson, who went on to become a leading running back in the NFL, was awarded the Heisman Trophy. Simpson was the second USC running back to win the title. In 18 games, he gained 3,187 yards, scored 21 touchdowns in 1968 and 13 in 1967. In 1995, his high-profile trial for the murder of his ex-wife and her friend would grow to overshadow his achievements on the field. Simpson was acquitted of the murders but was later found liable for their deaths in a civil trial. The trophy was later auctioned in 1999 to pay the civil damages.
