Common Has Thoughts on Beef at Award Shows

Get with the times, folks.

When the stars broke out in L.A. for BET’s most-anticipated time of the year, the BET Awards, so did more feuds of 2017.

One day it was Meek Mill and Safaree and. just two days later, a three-party uproar included Joe Budden, Migos and, as some point out, Chris Brown. Now that the ruckus is over with, allow an hip-hop veteran like Common to enlighten us on how played out these awards show “beefs” are becoming.

TMZ caught up with the Chicago rap legend at LAX where he was probed on a few questions surrounding the BET Awards weekend drama. After Common explains that he didn’t see the events that unfolded, the reporter asks him another question suggesting that BET is propagating some of the negativity.

“BET is not in control of what people do, or people’s attitudes or whatever,” he responded. “It just happens — it’s human beings. It could be on the streets of Baltimore or New York, or even in the best places — the most richest places. People get in disputes, you know?”

Common continues explaining that no single entity can control the industry’s ever-present disagreements and conflicts, including BET. Once he makes his way to his vehicle, he switches up the subject briefly by flashing his Angeleno magazine cover with his face gracing the front of it. That didn’t stop the reporter from digging in more questions, though, and Common shut it down by expressing that focus is the key to success in the music industry because disputing just isn’t worth it and will send you on a long path to nowhere.

Seemingly, he finished the impromptu TMZ interview by closing his door. But he had a few last words to throw in when the reporter asked about awards shows becoming like those of the ‘90s, where some of the most epic, and sadly fatal, rap beefs were ignited.

“’90s — we don’t want it to be like that,” he said. “People were getting killed. We don’t want that. God bless the souls of the great.”

Common added that “we’re in a new time right now” and he believes we’re moving forward, not backward, from such sensitive times.

Words of the wise.
