September will be a big month for Drake. Aside from debuting a new album and tour, he also covers the 150th issue of XXL magazine — his 16th time on the front page.
Inside, Drizzy discusses his album, wanting to stand out and that sexual tweet from Amanda Bynes ("If that's her, I guess it's a little weird and disturbing," he said).
The YMCMB rapper admits that with so many releases from rappers this year (Jay Z and Kanye West, among them), joining the list of "legends" worried him. Instead of backing down, however, he used the trepidation as fuel. "I think I am going for it, to really establish what are murmurs or things being said quietly, 'Um I think that Drake might actually ...' [When the album comes out] on September 17th, I want people to be like, 'Oh, we were right.'"
At 26, the OVO chief certainly has put up a strong fight to convince rap fans that the throne is for the taking (and that we should watch him take it). His So Far Gone mixtape earned Grammy nominations, and both of his solo albums — Thank Me Later and Take Care — debuted at No. 1.
But that doesn't mean that he doesn't admire his competitors, West included. "That's a guy I can't pretend not to like. He's the guy to me in a lot of ways," Drake said. "...But I'm also here to be the best. I'm here to surpass. I'm here to outdo. I'm ready for whatever with anybody."
Drake's XXL cover hits stands Aug. 20.
