Steve Harvey Dragged on Twitter for Huge Miss Universe Mistake
If you even glanced at Twitter on Sunday night, you probably know that Steve Harvey made a huge mistake in his duties as host of the Miss Universe pageant. Believe it or not, the Family Feud host actually crowned the wrong winner.
It all started during the finale. Just after Miss USA was given third place, Harvey announced Miss Philippines as the first runner-up, and then crowned Miss Colombia as the new Miss Universe. There were tears of joy, rose petals and pageant waves as Ariadna Gutierrez was named the new queen, and all seemed right in the world of pageantry.
About sixty seconds later, however, Harvey returned to the front of the stage to make an announcement. He then awkwardly confessed he made a mistake and the winner was actually Miss Philippines, not Miss Colombia. Harvey begged the viewers, "please don't hold this against the ladies," taking full blame for the mistake and even showing the card with the correct winner to the camera. The confusion was made that much worse after Miss Colombia needed a translator to understand the blunder. He concluded by saying, "we feel so badly, but it's still a great night."
Of course, neither the contestants nor Twitter seemed to agree that the night was great. Social media users who caught wind of the gaffe wasted no time jumping on Harvey:
It’s going to be hard for the Miss Universe organization, which expects an almost unrealistic sense of perfection and poise from its contestants, to live this one down. As for Steve, there was confusion about the card he was reading, as Charlamagne Tha God pointed out. Nonetheless, at least he owned up to his mistake and also apologized on Twitter. Unfortunately, his mistake made some racists spit endless hate. Harvey was called the n-word and tons of other slurs. While social media sometimes brings out the funniest in people, it also brings out the ugliest.
