Octavia Spencer to Star in Sci-Fi Thriller Snow Piercer
No more "bad parts" for Octavia Spencer! The Oscar favorite just added another high-profile role to her already-crowded plate with Snow Piercer, a sci-fi thriller from Korean director Bong Joon-Ho. Chris Evans, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton round out the cast.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Snow Piercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.
Spencer plays a passenger on the train who joins the revolt in order to save her son.
The Help star will first film Juno scribe Diablo Cody's directorial debut with Julianne Hough before jumping on to Snow Piercer. She was also recently in Park City, Utah, promoting her indie drama Smashed and, of course, a fixture on red carpets this awards season.
While she is the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress award at the Oscars this month, Spencer revealed to Ellen Degeneres that she has a lot of, uh, support herself on the red carpet from a particular undergarment.
Finding getting ready for the awards show "very stressful," Spencer said that she wore three pairs of Spanx shapewear under her Tadashi Shoji gown at the SAG Awards.
"I was not a Girl Scout, but I try to be very prepared. I triple Spanx," she told DeGeneres, adding that she does so for every awards show. "It's wonderful because it gives you the illusion of an hourglass [figure] with the sand kind of spread out."
The actress had the sympathy of another big and beautiful breakout star — Bridesmaids Melissa McCarthy. "I could not party that night because I was being pinched in places that I didn't know it was possible. I ran into Melissa [and] said, 'Oh my God, Melissa, I'm about to die. My Spanx are killing me.' She said, 'I just went to the bathroom and took mine off!'"
Maybe it's time for these gorgeous, full-figured and talented Oscar nominees to start a new red carpet trend: let it all hang out!
