Lady Gaga garnered mass media attention with the promotion of her new album, Born This Way, and this week the album has conquered the charts. Born This Way sold 1,108,000 copies in its first week, making it the biggest-selling album since 50 Cent's The Massacre in 2005.
Gaga was everywhere in the run-up to her sophomore release, appearing on Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Late Show With David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, American Idol and even on BET’s 106 & Park. The album's biggest boost, though, came from Amazon. For two days, the digital retailer offered Born This Way for only 99 cents in a special deal designed to promote their new cloud music service. Billboard.com estimates that Amazon sold more than 440,000 copies of the white-hot album this way.

Other recent artists to sell more than 1 million in a week include Taylor Swift, with Speak Now in 2010 and Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III in 2008. The all-time record still belongs to N'Sync, who sold more than 2.4 million copies the first week No Strings Attached was in stores in 2000.
Elsewhere on the charts, Rick Ross and his Maybach Music Group affiliates debut at No. 5 with Self Made, Vol. 1. The Warner Music–backed collaboration album sold 59,000 copies its first week on the shelves. Though now overshadowed by Gaga, MMG rapper Wale has a history with the pop megastar, who sang the hook on his first single, "Chillin'," in 2009, before she was a household name.
Previous No. 1, Adele, dips to No. 3 with 126,000 copies sold of her album 21.
