Lee Daniels' Star is a show about the music business, but addresses a lot of vital social issues as well, ranging from domestic violence to police brutality.
One of the most commonly-discussed themes is acceptance of LGBT lives, and Queen Latifah (who plays the mother of a trans woman in the series) exclusively talked to BET.com about the beauty in bringing this dialogue to primetime TV.

"My job is to make sure that [my character] Carlotta's feelings or confusion or ignorance about certain situations is played honestly, and you need to see that," she said. "That's one of the fun things about being able to do this show is to show these things — how they can really happen in life — not just some stereotype or some kind of overblown celebrity situation, but really, what happened up until this point that you met this celebrity who had transitioned?"

She also specifically touched on why these stories can serve as the saving grace for several LGBT-identifying youth who feel unheard and unseen.

"You see kids who are figuring out their identities at a younger age," she continued. "By showing some of these scenarios, people don't have to go through as much pain. We save some lives. People aren't wanting to kill themselves because they don't know what to do."
