Macklemore: I Apologize for Offensive Costume

"Thrift Shop" rapper says, disguise "had no intended cultural identity or background."

Macklemore has officially apologized for an offensive costume he wore at a Seattle performance late last week. The "Thrift Shop" rapper took to his website Monday (May 19) to make amends for rocking a disguise that has been criticized as anti-Semitic.

The 30-year-old, whose birth name is Ben Haggerty, explained that although the large nose, beard and wig he wore on stage appeared to mimic a stereotypical Jewish character, the costume "had no intended cultural identity or background."

Mack and Ryan Lewis were booked as surprise guests at EPM museum in Seattle. The music star maintains that the goal with his outfit was only to entertain, not offend. "My intention was to dress up and surprise the people at the show with a random costume and nothing more," he noted. "Thus, it was surprising and disappointing that the images of a disguise were sensationalized leading to the immediate assertion that my costume was anti-Semetic [sic]. I acknowledge how the costume could, within the context of stereotyping, be ascribed to a Jewish caricature. I am here to say that it was absolutely not my intention, and unfortunately at the time I did not foresee the costume to be viewed in such regard. I am saddened that this story, or any of my choices, would lead to any form of negativity."

He ended the statement with one final expression of regret adding, "I truly apologize to anybody that I may have offended, I hope this better explains the situation, and my point of view."

At this stage in his career, Mack is not only accustomed to backlash but he's also not above saying "sorry." Instead of celebrating his Grammy win for Best Rap Album earlier this year, the Seattle-born rhymer sent an apology text to Kendrick Lamar, who was also nominated in the category.
