5 Things You Didn’t Know About DC Young Fly
It’s hard to remember a time when DC Young Fly was not a part of the comedy and hip hop space.
Born John Whitfield, the Atlanta native has been unable to avoid success in the comedic space, from being named “Rookie of the Year” on MTV’s Wild ‘N Out in 2017 and hosting MTV’s TRL, to starring in movies like How High 2. The 20-year-old comedic actor was even listed as Variety’s “Top 10 Comics to Watch” in 2019.
Tonight, October 5 at 9 PM ET/PT on BET, DC Young Fly and the rest of his 85 South crew of Chico Bean and Karlous Miller will host the 16th annual BET Hip Hop Awards for the second straight year.
However, before they light up the stage, here’s a deeper dive into just who exactly DC Young Fly is and what he might bring to the stage.
Was Instagram and Vine Famous First
An argument can be made that DC was one of the first comedians to blow up because of the internet.
His classic “bring that a** here boy” roasting skits are now in the viral hall of fame and are considered cult hood classics, as he was, at one point, the main source of comedy for many circa 2014.
Makes Music
What’s unfair about DC Young Fly is that he appears naturally talented at everything and without having to try. The same goes for his music.
Young Fly has been releasing singles since as early as 2011 but made his music career official with his first album, Curb Music, which arrived in 2018, followed by Trap Soul (2019) and Fly Womack (2020).
If you love R&B, then DC Young Fly’s music is for you, as he croons unashamedly vulnerable lyrics about real-life experiences, growing fanbase, and, of course, love.
Make sure you check out his newest single, “Good Thang” (feat. Rotimi).
Big On Family
If you’re to know anything about Youngfly, it’s that he’s big on family. For starters, he makes up a family of 9, being the youngest of seven kids.
Additionally, the Atlanta native has two beautiful children with social media maven, YouTuber and long-time girlfriend Jacky Oh. He’s also crazy about his daughter, Nova, as he’s constantly sharing her photos on social media, making it very clear that she is literally everything to him.

He’s Socially Conscious
While DC is very goofy and one of the most entertaining acts out, the father of two is also socially conscious and uses his platform for good.
Not only does he remind people books are the secret to success, as well as sharing his own book collection, during the George Floyd protests, he made sure to speak up on the Black Lives Matter movement, showing he can both roast and show compassion.
A Great Actor
As you could have guessed, Youngfly is talented on the big screen as well.
From Almost Christmas in 2016 and The New Edition Story a year later to scoring his first lead in How High 2 (2019), DC has become the default cousin that we’ve come to expect in Black cinema.
