25-Year-Old Mom Dies After Breast Implant, Tummy Tuck and Butt Lift Surgery Goes Wrong

Here's what U.S. authorities want you to know about getting work done abroad.

A 25-year-old mother of two died in the Bronx on Thursday as a result of complications from plastic surgery received in the Dominican Republic, said police.

Janelle Edwards — who had recently gotten breast enhancement, a tummy tuck and butt implants — was found unconscious in her car just after 8 p.m., reported New York Daily News.

Edwards’s parents found her slumped behind the wheel and called authorities. The 25-year-old was taken to Montefiore Medical Center’s Albert Einstein Hospital — where she once worked, according to a Facebook post — where she was pronounced dead, sources said.

“We found her in the car unresponsive,” her mother, Marjorie Edwards, 57, told the Daily News. “We don’t know what happened.”

After conducting medical tests, a doctor informed detectives Edwards suffered from blood clots as a result of her surgeries.

When Edwards returned from Santo Domingo, she complained about pain in her stomach and breast, according to family members.

Edwards had two daughters, one 7-year-old and one 1-year-old.

Edwards joins many other men and women who have died from surgeries abroad. Doctors want people to know getting a cheaper surgery abroad may not be worth the health risk.

“I know the cheaper cost is tempting, but consider the risks,” Dr. Susan Downey explained in a video posted on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website. “If any problems come up, you may have additional costs and no legal protection.”

“Cosmetic surgery is real surgery and requires consultation, planning and follow-up care best with a board-certified surgeon,” she said.

In addition, taking a long flight after a surgery can increase the risk of developing a pulmonary embolism and blood clots. People should wait seven days to fly after surgery.
