James Earl Jones Honored As ‘One of the Greatest’ During Broadway Ceremony

Denzel Washington, Courtney B. Vance, Whoopi Goldberg, and others paid tribute to the EGOT winner.

Late acting titan James Earl Jones had a memorial fit for Broadway this week.

On Monday, April 7, a bevy of celebrities, including Denzel Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, and Glynn Turman, attended the ceremony at James Earl Jones Theatre, formerly the Cort Theatre, in Manhattan. Last September, Jones died at 93 after a long battle with type 2 diabetes.

“He was powerful, he was present, he was purposeful, he was humble,” Washington said in a speech, according to The New York Times. “He is not only the greatest African American actor; in my opinion, he is one of the greatest actors ever to be on a Broadway stage.”

Washington succeeded Jones as one of the multiple actors to play Othello on Broadway, while Paul Robeson was the first performer to play the fictional character.

Additionally, Goldberg, who played alongside Jones as a voice actor in the 1994 version of "The Lion King," regarded the late thespian as an “extraordinary” talent. “When you think about Broadway, when you think about people of color, when you think about Black men doing things that are extraordinary, you think about him,” she said.

More gave impassioned speeches on Jones, like Phylicia Rashad and Courtney B. Vance, who played alongside Jones on Broadway in the 1987 version of ‘Fences.’ “I literally didn’t know upstage from downstage,” Vance told the NYT, adding, “I really owe all of them a debt to teaching me the ropes of how this thing called ‘the business’ works.”

Jones, who won two Tony Awards, starred in 21 Broadway productions, the last of which was "The Gin Game" in 2016.
