A'ja Wilson Shatters Single-Season Scoring Record
WNBA star A'ja Wilson added another milestone to her record-breaking career, surpassing the single-season scoring record of 939 points, previously held by Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd, with a free-throw shot.
The Las Vegas Aces center secured the title with 26.4 seconds left in the second quarter of their game against the Indiana Fever on Wednesday evening (September 11).
The two-time WNBA MVP finished the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds, helping her team to an 86-75 victory.
Wilson credited her teammates for helping her achieve the record, sharing, “I don’t want to sound cliché when I say this, but I don’t get any of that without every single teammate along the way. I’m so grateful to be able to play with selfless women.”
She added, “My teammates are the heartbeat. They keep me going. I don’t get any points without them passing me the basketball.”
Wilson needed just 35 games to break Loyd’s record, which was set in 38 games last year. Her previous career high was 912 points, achieved in 40 games last season.
Now at 956 points, Wilson is on pace to potentially become the first player in league history to score 1,000 points in a single season.
