Kendrick Lamar Aims for Model Equality in "Poetic Justice"
Kendrick Lamar went against the norm when choosing a model for the lead in the video for his latest track, "Poetic Justice" featuring Drake. Bucking the trend of placing the typical light-skinned female love interest in his music video, Lamar opted to showcase a dark-skinned beauty. Lamar spoke with Miss Info about his last minute decision to cast the lovely Brittany Sky.
"We had another girl for the lead but I had an idea where I just wanted a little bit of a darker tone [girl] in the video. It's almost like a color blind industry where there's only one type of appeal to the camera. It was a girl on set and I said, 'Ask her.'"
Lamar wanted to make it clear that his decision was not about dark skin vs. light skin, also tweeting Miss Info:
"Not Light 'Vs' Dark tho. More about 'BALANCE'..Givn every shade of woman life, not jus what da industry thinks is 'Hott' 4 camera."
"When u put the term light 'Vs' dark continues it as a BATTLE. My point 4 poetic was to spark the idea of making it an EQUAL."
Lamar's effort to display a balance among beauty in the media is a refreshing reversal on male artists' usual lack of respect for the women in their videos. Brittany Sky, the lucky leading lady in the video who was hand-picked by Lamar out of a crowd of extras, also breaks stereotypes. Sky has a master’s degree from St. John’s University and plans on launching an online boutique.
