Social Media Users Blast Jennifer Garner After Actress Questions Regina King’s Ancestry
Actress Jennifer Garner is currently experiencing a belated wave of criticism following the emergence of a rediscovered video in which she raises questions about Regina King's ancestry.
This incident took place during a 2017 episode of Chelsea Handler’s Netflix original series "Chelsea," titled “Dinner Party: My American Experience.”
In this episode, the standup comedian gathered a circle of her Hollywood acquaintances for a candid conversation about “their roots, patriotism, religion, and modern America's complexities,” all while enjoying a meal and drinks.
Among the participants were notable figures like Garner, Mary McCormack, Dan Savage, Rob Riggle, and King, the latter of whom led the discussion by talking about her experience as a Los Angeles native.
The “Watchmen” star shared, “I grew up here in L.A. — born and bred. [I’m] one of the few people that are born and bred in L.A. So that’s a — I think — very cool thing.”
“I kind of wear it on my chest very proudly because so many people say, ‘Oh, L.A. is this, and L.A. is that.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you’re not from L.A., so you don’t really know it,’” the actress continued before Garner interjected to ask, “But do you know where your ancestors are from?”
King responded, “We’re part of the triangle slave trade,” before adding that her family has roots in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Senegal.”
The clip went viral almost immediately. Many social media users felt the question seemingly had racist undertones, including one Twitter user who wrote, “The look on her face + that backhanded ass question oh that was a hard R for sure.”
Another person added, “It wasn’t just what she said but how she said it too - you could smell the sinister condescension behind the question. She wanted Regina to feel uncomfortable.”
