Lawyers from both sides of the Trayvon Martin case can agree on one thing: social media has had a large impact in the prosecution of George Zimmerman.
Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman's attorney, and Benjamin Crump, Trayvon's family attorney, both spoke to the media briefly about this phenomenon at the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters banquet Saturday, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

As onlookers tweeted and used Facebook to share their views on the killing of Trayvon, an unarmed 17-year-old boy, by the former neighborhood watch volunteer, information on the case was brought to a worldwide audience. 

"I think if I could do away with all media, including all social media, I would not have an involvement in a criminal case," Mark O'Mara said. "But that's a fantasy that was 40 years ago."

The Orlando Sentinel reports:

Crump agreed that social media played an integral role in the criminal case against Zimmerman — by giving a voice to outraged onlookers who thought justice needed to be served.

"We didn't engage social media," he said. "It's almost as if social media engaged us."

He said the grass-roots-social-media movements that were bred from Trayvon's death have the potential to alter the way all criminal cases are handled in the future.

"All the world is watching because they want to see if everybody gets equal justice in America," he said.
