Monica Jumps Off Stage Into Crowd to Defend Woman Being Assaulted at Her Concert
The inaugural Riverfront Music Festival in Detroit faced an unexpected disruption over the weekend that led singer Monica to stop her set.
The incident involved an alleged assault in the audience — which prompted the singer to personally intervene in the altercation.
In a clip making its way around social media, the “So Gone” singer could be seen climbing down from the stage at Hart Plaza to address a man who had reportedly hit a woman. “You don’t hit no f**kin’ lady like that,” the singer shouted before demanding security to remove the man.
Monica later returned to the stage where she apologized to a crowd of cheering fans. She explained to the audience, “That s**t triggered me.” The 42-year-old added, “I seen him punch that lady in the face, I lost my f**kin’ temper. I apologize y'all. I apologize from the bottom of my heart.”
Still upset, the singer added, “I was gonna knock [his] ass out with this fuckin’ mic.”
The story was ultimately picked up by gossip outlet The Shaderoom — with Monica taking to the comments section of the post to again apologize for her actions.
“I was so triggered, I watched and she didn’t appear to even know him,” she said in the lengthy statement. “It appeared to be about space during a packed concert! He punched her with all his strength! My intentions were to prevent her from being hit again and she wasn’t! I asked for help, it fell on deaf ears! It was like seeing my mother or an aunt be assaulted!! This woman was 50+ I pray she’s ok!”
Andrus Macdonald, a spokesperson for the venue, addressed the incident in a statement to the Metro Times. Macdonald thanked Monica for “her courage and decisive intervention during an unfortunate incident at our Festival.”
Macdonald added that Monica’s actions showed “a commitment to the safety and respect of her fans, reinforcing our belief that she is not just an extraordinary talent, but an extraordinary individual as well.
