Box Office: Elysium Triumphs, Planes Crashes

Matt Damon's political actioner soars to number one.

Matt Damon's approval ratings are slightly better than President Obama's this week. The outspoken actor scored another No. 1 film with Elysium, which managed to top the box office this weekend but still fell short of expectations with $30.5 million in ticket sales.

The politically-tinged sci-fi actioner, also starring Sharlto Copley and Alice Braga, beat out a sea of new entries, including family fare Planes and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and comedy We're the Millers
We're the Millers, a comedy starring Jennifer Aniston about a group of people posing as a typical American family in order to complete a drug run to Mexico, came in second place with $38 million over five days (the film opened on Wednesday) — not a champagne-popping opening but not a bad one either.

Audiences, however, are clearly over G-rated family films, with both Planes and Percy Jackson performing well under expectations. Planes, Disney's spin-off of Pixar's massive Cars franchise, grossed a mere $22.5 million, while Percy Jackson did only slightly better with $23.5 million.
Rounding out the top five was Denzel Washington's 2 Guns, which lost nearly half its audience but still raked in $11.1 million over the weekend, bringing its two-week total to $48.5 million. The relatively "modest" budget of the action films means, with a strong international showing, it could be profitable.
Next week, Kick-Ass 2 goes up against Liam Hemsworth's Paranoia and the ensemble-driven Lee Daniels' The Butler
