F. Gary Gray Zeros In on N.W.A. Biopic
Straight Outta Compton, the planned N.W.A. biopic from New Line Cinema, may have found its director. F. Gary Gray, the former music video director who helmed '90s classics Friday, Set It Off and The Negotiator, as well as 2003's The Italian Job, has entered talks with the studio to take on the project, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Gray reportedly beat out John Singleton, George Tillman and Elgin James for the job.
The N.W.A. movie is being co-produced by Ice Cube and Eazy-E's widow, Tomica Woods, and the script was written by Andrea Berloff of World Trade Center.
The story is said to follow the formation, rise and fall of the legendary West Coast rap group who changed hip hop with their aggressive, political and unapologetic content.
F. Gary Gray had previously been in the running to direct the Captain America sequel, but would turn down that project for Straight Outta Compton.
