Spike Lee Feels the Wrath of Twitter
The trailer for Spike Lee's latest joint Chiraq has officially been released by Amazon, and social media has a lot to say about it.
Kicking off with the words "This is an emergency" flashing across the screen three times, the trailer then features a group of women deciding that they are going to withhold sex via the pledge "I will deny rights of access and entrance." The trailer also features some pretty big names in Hollywood, including Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Cannon, John Cusack, LaLa Anthony, Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, Dave Chappelle and Teyonah Paris.
The controversial film, an adaptation of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata, centers on gang violence in Chicago and a group of women’s decision to withhold sex until their men give up guns. Chiraq has been a hot topic for some time now, with some giving Lee the side-eye about what his portrayal of Chi-Town's culture of violence, but nevertheless, the anticipation has been high.
Almost immediately after the trailer hit the web, Twitter went into a frenzy, with users — Chicago natives, especially — giving a collective "huh?" to the work. Take a look at some of the reactions below.
Not everyone thought the trailer was a bust, though. Some had some positive words to say about it:
