BET Awards 20: BET Award Winners Speak Out on Injustice
Some celebrities never talk about politics. They do their jobs and that’s it. Others see their elevated platform as an opportunity to affect change and use it to amplify what they deem to be important messages. The celebrities on this list fall in the latter category, using their money, their voices, or even their feet to join in the movement . As protests continue to go on across the country after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police, some of your favorite celebs are speaking out.
Below are a few BET Award winners who are not staying silent during these uncertain times. One thing is for sure though. The 2020 BET Awards are going down June 28th at 8pm EST and there will be powerful words and performances to feed your soul.
Michael B. Jordan (Best Actor 2016, 2019)
Michael B. Jordan is proving that he’s not just a fighter on the big screen, he’s a (freedom) fighter in real life too. The actor has taken to the streets in solidarity with Black Lives Matter protestors who are speaking up against police brutality. “I want us to invest in black staff,” Jordan told a crowd of Hollywood protestors. “I’m proud to have an inclusion rider and all that good stuff, and I use my power to demand diversity, but it’s time the studios and agencies and all these buildings we stand in front of to do the same.”
Beyonce (27x BET Award Winner)
Beyonce is not new to activism. She and her husband Jay-Z have attended rallies for Trayvon Martin and have donated to Black Lives Matter. She’s also donated to other charitable causes. Now in the midst of the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and racism, King Bey is using her time and words to encourage young people. She popped up during YouTube’s Dear Class of 2020 special to let graduates know that she appreciates their activism and looks forward to “Thank you for using your collective voice and letting the world know that black lives matter,” she said. “The killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others have left us all broken,” she explains. “It has left the entire country searching for answers. We’ve seen that our collective hearts, when put to positive action, could start the wheels of change. Real change has started with you, this new generation of high-school and college graduates who we celebrate today.”
LeBron James (Sportsman of the Year 7x)
Over the years, LeBron James has been vocal about numerous racial and civil rights issues. Back in 2014 after the death of Eric Garner, James donned a t-shirt that said “I can’t breathe” as he warmed up for a Cavaliers vs Nets game. Now, following the recent death of George Floyd, he is once again speaking up. The three-time NBA champ is taking the fight to the voting booth. James and some of his deep-pocketed celebrity pals are founding an organization to combat voter suppression in the Black community. “I’m inspired by the likes of Muhammad Ali, I’m inspired by the Bill Russells and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbars, the Oscar Robertsons — those guys who stood when the times were even way worse than they are today,” James told the New York Times.

Kerry Washington (Best Actress, 2013)
As Olivia Pope on Scandal, Kerry Washington always had everything “handled.” In real life, Washington is also a straight shooter and she appreciates the hands-on approach of the protests popping up all over the country. “ I feel like we as a nation, and as a world in some ways, we're just done having our governments work in ways that don't reflect our values. Like I think for a long time people thought you could just be a passenger in this train called democracy, but that's not how it works,” said Washington during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Democracy works if we all show up, and we all express our values, whether it's voting or in the streets protesting. That is what democracy looks like."
Kanye West (9x BET Award Winner)
Kanye West’s political views have been the subject of numerous headlines over the years, especially after his “slavery was a choice” comment and his filmed oval office meeting with Donald Trump as he wore a Make America Great Again hat. West surprised many people when it was reported that he donated a sizeable sum to the families of Black people recently killed by police. The Chicago rapper also participated in a protest in his hometown in solidarity with locals who want the Chicago PD out of public schools.
