Box Office: Iron Man 3 Scores Second Biggest Opening in History
Iron Man 3 fell short of making history, but we doubt the producers of the film are disappointed with its performance.
The Marvel franchise threequel skyrocketed to the top of the charts all over the world this weekend, including a first place finish at the US box office. The film grossed $175.3 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $680.1 million. The only film in history to beat those numbers is The Avengers, also a Marvel property and also starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.
Besides RDJ, Iron Man 3 brings back Don Cheadle and Gwyneth Paltrow and adds new cast members Ben Kingsley and Rebecca Hall. The franchise also has a new director in Shane Black.
While it's no surprise Iron Man 3 handily knocked Pain & Gain from the top spot, the dark comedy from summer blockbuster maestro Michael Bay held its own with a second place finish and and additional $7.6 million in its coffers. The muscle-bound comedy stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie as competitive bodybuilders.
Rounding out the top five were Jackie Robinson biopic 42, Tom Cruise's Oblivion and family film The Croods.
Next week, The Great Gatsby enters the summer movie melee and will try to steal female audiences while Peeples starring Kerry Washington and Craig Robinson counter-programs for urban audiences and comedy fans.
