2023 NAACP Image Awards: 5 Times 'Entertainer of the Year' Winner Jennifer Hudson Wowed Us With Her Talent

The multi-talented actress/singer took home the top award at the 53rd Annual Image Awards.

Jennifer Hudson stunned fans when she made her television debut on the hit musical competition show American Idol in 2004. However, it would only prove to display only a fraction of Hudson’s full musical capabilities. Since then, the 40-year-old has released classic hit records, delivering some of the most powerful and memorable performances in music and movies.

This year, Hudson won big at last year's NAACP Image Awards, earning herself the "Entertainer of the Year" award. And it makes sense why! Here are five-times Jennifer Hudson wowed viewers with her talent.

  • “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going”

Hudson gave a stellar performance of the single from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Only a vocal powerhouse such as the singer could execute, was sung by Hudson’s character Effie White in the 2006 feature film remake.

  • “The Star-Spangled Banner”

Not only did Jennifer give a phenomenal performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at the 2009 Super Bowl XLIII, she bravely did it just months following the tragic loss of several of her closest loved ones.

  • “His Eyes Is On The Sparrow”

During a 2011 appearance on The Tonight Show,  host Jimmy Fallon asked the Grammy Award-winning singer to give just a “taste” of her favorite song. What came next was a rain pour of vocal capabilities unlike anything viewers have heard.

  • “The Impossible Dream”

In a vintage NAACP Image Award clip from 2009, Hudson gave a memorable performance of the iconic song from Broadway’s Man of La Mancha in tribute to Muhammad Ali — the recipient of the NAACP President’s Award that year. The singer also took home three major awards that night for her debut album.

  • “Aretha Franklin” medley

Before she portrayed the iconic soul singer in the 2021 biopic Respect, Hudson bolstered through a medley of Franklin’s hits, including “Rock Steady,” “Think,” ‘Respect,” “Daydreaming,” “Natural Woman,” and “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” during the 2014 BET honors.

Watch the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 8/9c.
