This Day in Black History: July 28, 1990
Soulja Boy Tell Em, who cranked his way to the top of the Billboard 100, was born on July 28, 1990, as DeAndre Way.
Way first became interested in hip hop music at the age of six while living in Atlanta. At 14, he moved with his father to Batesville, Mississippi, and began exploring music in a recording studio.
Way first rose to stardom on websites such as MySpace and YouTube. Then in 2007, his song “Crank That” topped the Billboard charts for seven weeks. In May 2007, he met with record producer Michael Crooms and signed a deal with Interscope Records.
In 2010, he was ranked 18th on Forbes’ list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings for earning $6 million that year.
His most recent single, “Handsome,” was released in March 2013.
