Barbados Proud: New Super Bowl Halftime Show Promo Takes Us Back To Rihanna's Neighborhood
Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known as Rihanna, grew up in a small home in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, with her parents and two younger brothers. And in an ad for her upcoming Super Bowl performance, the NFL is taking us back to Bridgetown.
In the ad, that dropped on Thursday (Feb. 9), you can literally feel the Bajan culture oozing throughout. Rihanna's single "Run This Town," plays as a group of young girls prep for their school day, walking proudly down a street named after Rihanna, and donning a pair of Black shades. In a press conference with Apple Music, Rihanna said her performance will be a 13-minute celebration of her catalog and culture.
"I mean, it’s a long way from home, right? It’s a long way from home. It’s a beautiful journey that I’m on, and I could’ve never guessed that I would have made it here. So it’s a celebration of that. I’m excited to do that. I’m really excited to have Barbados on the Super Bowl stage," she said.
The ad is quite apropos, simply because the singer never forgets her upbringing and is a proud Bajan. The island's rich cultural heritage and love for music have shaped her as an artist and have been a source of inspiration for her music, and she has made sure to give back to her country.
In 2012, Rihanna established the "Believe Foundation" in her home country, which provides support to underprivileged children and young people in need. Rihanna's success serves as an inspiration to young people in Barbados and around the world, showing them that with hard work and determination, they too can achieve their dreams.
You can check out Rihanna performing during Sunday's Super Bowl Halftime show, which is sure to have the streets of Barbados talking!
