#Unboxed Vol. 28: N3WYRKLA is Spreading Her Musical Wings While Finding Her Voice

The multigenre singer’s new EP, ‘SELFishly enTITLED,’ culminates patience and growth.

N3WYRKLA’s creative output is a little hard to define upon first listen. She’s a bit of neo-soul, indie, and R&B, but the unique mixture of genres is the type of music she loves to make.

The South New Jersey-based singer has already seen a lot in the music industry at a young age. The daughter of rapper and Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast co-host Gillie Da Kid, she’s been able to witness some of the interworkings of the entertainment business but hasn’t been thrust into them too early.

N3WYRKLA, a moniker derived from her born name, Nyla, split in half and then fleshed out creatively, has taken the time to develop her sound and the type of artist she wants to be. During a recent interview with BET, she explained that she started out as a rapper but later got swept up by the emo and punk scenes prevalent in the Garden State.

“I grew up like in choirs. I played like instruments a little bit, but I feel like going to college and just going through life made me realize like, Okay, I have some confidence to do music,” N3WYRKLA explains. “And then I just started locking it in the studio every day, trying to perfect my sound and really dive into what I want to tell through my art.”

After discovering that more alternative music was her taste, which came after experimental studio sessions where she would try singing over different instrumentals she says “felt right” to her, N3WYRKLA began compiling a bunch of songs she initially wanted to drop over the excitement of creating but later proved to be the foundation of her debut project.

In August, after partnering with COLTURE, Venice Music, and her father’s With Million Dollaz Worth of Game Entertainment imprint, she released SELFishly enTITLED – an EP that is the product of the experiences of a young woman attempting to fit into both the music and real worlds.

“It just tells the story of me being a woman going through the ups and downs of being with somebody and being honest about this situation with yourself and really just processing it,” she says. “It's about being selfish with your energy and people always feeling like they're entitled to you and and your energy.”

This notion plays out prominently in the single “care about myself,” where N3WYRKLA sings about the disappointment of others letting her down and never putting her faith in someone else. It’s the understandable musings of a woman in her early 20s trying to figure out what life has in store for her. She notes that her family's support makes a huge difference in that right of passage.

When asked about her father, Gillie, N3WYRKLA says she couldn’t have hoped for a better parent who supports her “100 percent.” And that’s not just through the musical partnership she’s involved in for her music releases. The singer explains that he helps her with decision-making while not forcing anything on her. That said, sometimes his pride is something he can’t contain.

During an episode of Million Dollaz Worth of Game from last year, Gillie and co-host Wallo asked guests Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats if they could play one of Nyla’s songs for them. An excited Keys not only encouraged it but was blown away after hearing a track called “Streets.” Suffice it to say, the young artist became elated after hearing the praise.

“That was a life changing moment for me, especially because I grew up listening to her. She's amazing,” she describes. “So hearing somebody like that who I look up to tell me, ‘Oh my god, your voice is beautiful, songs are so good.’ It just was really amazing.”

N3WYRKLA has also had to deal with tragedy recently. In July, her brother and Gillie’s son Devin, aka YNG Cheese, was killed in a triple shooting in Philadelphia, which has torn her family up. According to Nyla, Cheese supported her and her foray into music.

“Going through that I feel like there's not really words I can say that explain it,” she describes. “That was my brother, but me still making music and pushing definitely means a lot to me, especially because it was something that he really wanted for me. Having him here, he was one of my biggest supporters.”

It’s a loss that still heavily weighs on her, Gillie, and all of their family and friends, but also something she says inspires her to help keep his legacy alive through her music. Moving forward, N3WYRKLA notes she plans on improving from the very strong debut she made with SELFishly enTITLED. It’s something her brother is rooting for.

“Not rushing to drop music is really helping me get better at writing,” she explains. “I'm developing the message I want to tell. I feel like my voice is a lot stronger now than it was two years ago, and [I’m] being consistent with it by being around people who have been doing it for a while.”
