“Cornel West For President,” he tweeted. “This will be the first and last time I vote. [sunglasses emoji] @CornelWest 2024.”

In a pre-recorded video, the scholar and public intellectual announced his candidacy for America’s highest office on Monday, stating he’s looking to eradicate issues such as mass incarceration, poverty, housing insecurities and health care, among others.

“In these bleak times, I have decided to run for truth and justice, which takes the form of running for President of the United States as a candidate for the People’s Party,” Dr. West said in the video. “I enter in the quest for truth, I enter in the quest for justice. And the presidency is just one vehicle to pursue that truth and justice – what I’ve been trying to do all of my life.”

An author and former professor at Harvard University, Cornel West has long been a political activist and a voice for racial justice in America. The 70-year-old did not join Democrats like Robert Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, who have thrown their hat into the nomination ring. Instead, he noted he was running under the People’s Party, an affiliation founded in 1892.
