Zoe Saldana is helping usher in a new magazine onto the scene. The 33-year-old actress will be on the cover of the premiere issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas, a women's lifestyle magazine that caters to English-speaking Latinas. In her interview, Saldana, who was born in New Jersey to Puerto Rican and Dominican parents, talks about being proud to be Latina.
"People think of Latina women as being fiery and fierce, which is usually true. But I think the quality that so many Latinas possess is strength, I'm very proud to have Latin blood," Saldana says.
She also touched upon how she loved to dance and became involved in various dance groups both in the Dominican Republic and in the United States, but wanted to use her voice more and so she went into acting.
"I had to quit ballet because it felt like a part of me was dying inside. It takes a lot of courage to face up to things you can't do because we feed ourselves so much denial. In dance, you use every part of your body except your voice. I wanted to start acting because I wanted to use my voice," she says.
But her ballet experience served her well in her first major screen role as Eva Rodriguez in the dance film Center Stage, and in 12 years she has made impressive leaps through the movie industry.
The premiere issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas hits newsstands May 1.
