Justin Bieber DUI Trial Delayed

Judge approves lawyer's request for more time, plea deal could be in the works.

The start date of Justin Bieber's DUI trial has been pushed back from May to July in order to give his defense team more time to prepare, and possibly accept a plea deal, Billboard reports.

"I want to give everyone plenty of time," Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield said at a hearing Wednesday (April 23). The trial will begin July 7.

Bieber, 20, was not present in court. The pop star has been in and out of trouble for the last several months, but the Miami dust up came in late January. He was arrested for driving under the influence during an alleged drag race with friend Khalil Amir Sharieff. He and Sharieff were both slapped with DUI charges and have pleaded not guilty. The Biebs was also busted for driving on an expired license and resisting arrest without violence.

However, authorities have had trouble keeping Bieber's original arrest story straight. According to a police report, Bieber was inebriated and speeding down a Miami street when he was pulled over. GPS data and a breathalyzer test proved otherwise.

At the time of his arrest, the "Broken" crooner reportedly admitted to smoking weed and taking prescription pills. A toxicology report confirmed that Bieber had marijuana and Xanax in his system, but only a small drop of alcohol. "There are some serious matters regarding the testing," Bieber's attorney Roy Black said.

Depending on the outcome of the tria,l Bieber could be looking at jail time. According to Black, "decisions" on whether or not the Canadian singer will accept a plea deal "have not yet been made."
