Lauryn Hill canceled her show in Israel scheduled for later this week amid urges to boycott the country's occupation in Palestine, reports the UK's Guardian. Hill confirmed the nixed show on her Facebook page Monday (May 4), without mention of the calls for her not to perform in Israel out of support for Palestine. 

Hill planned shows in both territories, a task that proved to be “a challenge,” she said. “I’ve wanted very much to bring our live performance to this part of the world, but also to be a presence supporting justice and peace,” she explained. “It is very important to me that my presence or message not be misconstrued, or a source of alienation to either my Israeli or my Palestinian fans. For this reason, we have decided to cancel the upcoming performance in Israel, and seek a different strategy to bring my music to ALL of my fans in the region. May healing, equanimity, and the openness necessary for lasting resolution and reconciliation come to this region and its people."

The campaign launched to persuade Hill against the Israeli show was launched with a video set to the Fugee’s version of “Killing Me Softly,” and a matching hashtag for social media. "The presence of artists is routinely used by Israel to legitimize its policies and maintain its reputation as a normal member of the international community," said a statement from the US Campaign to End Israeli Occupation calling for Hill not to perform in Israel.

Hill scrapped a performance in Nigeria last week due to a promoter being unable to purchase her plane tickets. As a show of apology to the West African country the 39-year-old performed a rousing acoustic version of “Doo-Wop (That Thing)." The video has been viewed more than 6.9 million times.
