Who will take home the honor this year?

2021 may have given us another year of uncertainty , however several rising stars managed to shine through the darkness that was the COVID -19 pandemic and gave us some jams and even some classic records to add to our playlist to better pass our days.

Past winners of Soul Train Awards’ “Best New Artist” have gone on to be legends in their own rights. Mariah Carey who took the honors in 1991, as did  D’Angelo, who took home the win in 1996 beating out major acts including Faith Evans, Junior M.A.F.I.A., and Monica.

Ahead of the 2021 Soul Train Awards we’re taking some time to get acquainted with the burgeoning stars in the race for this year’s “Best New Artist” award.

  • BLXST

Born Matthew Burdette, this multi-talent musician who began his career relatively recently. His breakout hit “Hurt” in 2019 made him the next artist to look out. Having already worked with some of the biggest acts in the industry including Ty Dolla $ign and YG,  BLXST is clearly off to a great start and doesn’t appear to be looking back.

  • CAPELLA GREY

Capella Grey never visited the island of Jamaica where his family is from, but you could never tell how his hit single “Gyalis”  which draws most of its sound from the Caribbean island. Born Curtis Jackson II, the singer has already surpassed 8 million views on YouTube—not a bad start for an artist looking to win the 2021 Soul Train Awards  “Best New Artist” honors.

  • MORRAY

Representing Fayetteville, North Carolina, this rapper-singer broke onto the scene with his soulful trap single “Quicksand,” singing about his real-life daily struggles although he nearly quit right before receiving a phone call that would literally change his life.

At the time Morray was only sporting a mere 1,000 views on YouTube, until talent manager Moe Shalizi called his wife up and told him he’d be willing to push the song for the upcoming artist. Let’s just say, 123,000,000 million YouTube views later, the rest was history.

  • Tems

We just can’t stop talking about alternative R&B and soul artist Tems--but with tracks like “Crazy Tings,” “Found,” and of course “Essence” with Wizkid, can you really blame us. This singer-songwriter is already collaborating with heavy hitters, including Drake, Justin Bieber, and many more. Regardless of this year’s outcome, Tems will definitely be a name you’ll be hearing for a while.

  • Tone Stith

You may not know who Tone Stith is just yet, but you’ve heard some of his lyrics sung by artists like Chris Brown. In 2015, the 26-year-old co-wrote Brown’s platinum single “Liquor” and since then has been honing his craft which seemed pretty easy for someone whose parent was a former vocalist for Patti LaBelle. Last June, Stith released his full-length project “FWM” which features several guest appearances including one from  Grammy award winning singer H.E.R.

  • Yung Bleu

Yung Bleu’s "You're Mines Still", peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 following a Drake assisted remix almost catapulting his career to the next level--oh, the power of the Canadian superstar. However, before the major co-sign, the Alabama native was already making a name for himself in the music industry with his 2017 viral single “Miss It.” His other project has also received applause from other rappers as well. This year, we’ll get to see if the 27-year-old’s hard work finally paid off.
