See the Custom Gucci Dress Michelle Obama Wore to the Kennedy Center Honors
I am writing this to you from the afterlife, because Michelle Obama has absolutely killed me. Our beloved FLOTUS wore a custom Gucci gown to the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors and it was so beautiful and so perfect and therefore, now I am dead.
The dress is gorgeous, but it may also carry a deeper meaning. This is the first time Obama has worn a non-American designer to the event, and as Vanessa Friedman wrote in the New York Times, it could be for a pointed reason. Obama wore an Italian brand the same day that Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi resigned, leaving the country open to a populist right-wing movement. (Sound familiar?) Renzi was supportive of Italy’s fashion industry, and Obama’s wearing of this dress on this particular day could signal support.
“Maybe [Obama] just thought, ‘Oh, that’s pretty.’ Because it was,” wrote Friedman. “But more likely, given her history with dress and the way she has used it as a strategic tool, she was also doing what she could to stress the importance of Italian fashion at a delicate time; making a discrete gesture of solidarity with a country and an administration and an industry.”
It may also be worth noting that Gucci’s flagship store is located in the Trump Tower, and the Donald reportedly gets a discount.
But at the end of the day, regardless of meaning, FLOTUS stunned. She and her sartorial statements will be deeply, deeply missed.
