Chelsea Clinton Thought Kanye West's VMA Speech Was 'Awesome'
Kanye West’s presidential bid announcement is Chelsea Clinton-approved. The former first daughter told MTV News that Yeezy’s speech at the VMAs will inspire young people to realize their potential.
“I definitely think who runs for office is really important,” Clinton said. “Even if him just saying that helps spark a little boy or a little girl who was watching the VMAs to think, ‘Oh, wow! Maybe I should do that,’ that’s awesome.”
But has Clinton thrown her support behind the rapper? Not yet. “I think it depends on who he’d be running against,” Clinton said.
Obviously, if her mother is running again in 2020, Chelsea’s support will swing her way.
A White House representative recently responded to West's bid in a statement to Billboard magazine. The White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said he looks "forward to seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his campaign hat."
The rapper also has some legitimate supporters who are excited about what West can bring to the table in a future election. Chairman of the Young Minority Republican Fund Eugene Craig took action and immediately registered ReadyForKanye.net last week. He also registered the Ready for Kanye political action committee with the Federal Election Commission.
"If Kanye is going to run in 2020, I would love to see him run in a Republican primary," Craig said to RollingStone.com. "He brings a lot to the discussion that's missing."
MTV News also talked to Chelsea about empowering women and girls. You can watch the full interview here.
