'Diarra From Detroit': The Mystery of Deonte: Diarra's Quest for Sleep Leads to Dark Secrets

In the series premiere, we're introduced to the world of Diarra Brickland and two crazy mysteries.

We open on a news segment on TV about the 1995 disappearance of young Deonte Brooks. As we pull back, there's blood on the floor, along with a machine gun and someone tied up in a chair. Our heroine escapes from a window. How did she get here? Flashback to a month ago…

Diarra Brickland is a Detroit schoolteacher on the brink of divorce. She's anxious and hasn't had a full eight hours of sleep in months. Just after moving back to her family home, she's nearly the victim of a home invasion, but she and her burglar realize they know each other from the old days. His name is Danger. They have a small reunion where she shares that her husband suggested an open marriage. Diarra moved out and they haven't spoken in three months. Danger suggests she sees his therapist. You know you're down bad when the person who just tried to rob you recommends therapy.

At the suggestion of her colleague Mr. Tea, Diarra finds herself on Tinder. But she's still angry over the separation and channels that into breaking up a student fight, where she catches a stray punch, a black eye and a reprimand from her principal.

Diarra Kilpatrick Is Detroit Through and Through

Diarra taps into white male anger by listening to Eminem on the way home, and her loud cursing attracts the attention of "Crazy Moni," Diarra's childhood frenemy. Moni is a mom now and wants Diarra to watch her language around the kids. In the middle of their argument, Moni reveals Danger has been telling Diarra's business, including the divorce. Diarra confronts Danger, saying she forgave him for the home invasion, but talking trash about her to Crazy Moni is a bridge too far. She busts his aquarium before leaving, but that still doesn't provide the outlet for her anger and frustration.

She fires up Tinder again and immediately matches with Chris.

They meet at a swank restaurant, the kind of place her husband would go. Diarra wants the grapevine to work in her favor this time. Diarra and Chris banter under the pretense of boilerplate dating questions and it's apparent they are attracted. She feels like she's seen him somewhere before; his eyes feel familiar. That's a good enough reason for them to hook up and it's just what Diarra needs. After their encounter, she finally gets eight hours of sleep and dubs him "Ambien Chris."

She tells her friend Aja (also Swa's cousin) that she's deeply in "like" with Ambien Chris. Aja thinks she's over her head and should focus on herself, but Diarra has a date with him later that night. When she texts him, he doesn't respond. When she calls, his Mailbox is full.

Five days go by without hearing from Chris. Tea thinks she's been ghosted. Diarra knows Chris lives across from a wing spot on the east side and drags Aja and Tea there to stake the place out. She wonders if something happened to him since their connection was so strong that there was no logical reason for him to ghost her. She remembers the two of them were briefly being followed but Aja thinks it was just a random vagrant. It is The D, after all.

Diarra later apologizes to Moni for her anger and shares that she was ghosted. She recruits Moni back to the east side to get her apology from Chris. When they enter his apartment, it's dark and seems abandoned. When Diarra opens the closet, a naked, tied-up Russian man tumbles out. Diarra demands answers, but he needs to speak more english. She cuts him loose with Moni's switchblade, and he escapes, dropping a mysterious keychain.

Once she gets home, she's formally served with divorce papers.

She sees a photo of Deonte Brooks still missing at the post office, next to a digital rendering of how he would look today. The age-progressed photo looks a lot like Ambien Chris. Diarra is now convinced Deonte is back in Detroit but "missing" again and is determined to find the man who is the cure for her insomnia.

In the end, we cut back to Chris receiving her first text, to which he responds before being punched out and dragged into a white truck. He loses his Jordan in the snow, and the truck pulls off.

Questions:

Is Chris really Deonte? If so, why does he keep being kidnapped?

What's that keychain all about?

Who is the Russian and why was he naked?

Will Diarra ever get eight hours of sleep again?
