Eddie Murphy Wins First Emmy For Hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’
Eddie Murphy took home his first-ever Emmy Award this year, winning Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at the 72nd Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday (Sept. 19). The 59-year-old earned the statue for hosting Saturday Night Live in 2019.
This was Murphy’s fifth Emmys nomination and first win, People reports. He was last nominated in 1999 for Outstanding Animated Program Fox's The PJs.
“Thank you, everybody, at the Emmys, thank you so much, for giving me an Emmy” Murphy said during his acceptance speech. “I don’t have an Emmy. This is 40 years since I started Saturday Night Live. This is my first Emmy so thank you so much.”
“I want to thank the cast and the writers and the crew at SNL. This was a very very special thing for me to come back and have the show turn out the way it did,” he continued. “I am still floating from it.”
Murphy was originally a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1980 to 1984 and last hosted the comedy skit show in 1984. He also briefly returned for the show’s 40th anniversary special in 2015.
