Black Missouri Man Opens Up About His 34-Year Wrongful Imprisonment

Christopher Dunn remained in prison even after his case was overturned in light of new evidence.

After spending over three decades and an extra week behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, Christopher Dunn’s freedom has been restored.

The now 56-year-old was wrongfully convicted in 1991 for the murder of 15-year-old Ricco Rogers and sentenced to life without parole. His conviction relied heavily on the testimonies of two eyewitnesses, aged 12 and 14 at the time, who later recanted their statements.

The Missouri native spoke with CBS Mornings this week in one of his first interviews since his release on Tuesday (July 30).

He candidly opened up about his journey, telling the outlet that one of the worst parts of being incarcerated was, “Waking up every day in prison, thinking to yourself this is another day that your life don't matter, that you would have been better off if dead.”

Joined by his wife, Kira Dunn, he spoke about missing his family’s security. He added, “I had some family members that were able to come to the prison and some that weren't. I have nephews I haven't seen since they were 1 year old.”

When asked about how he plans to navigate the world, Dunn admitted, “This world right here, to me, is so foreign that I need a passport to enter it.” When asked if that’s how he felt, Dunn responded, “Sure, because you got to think, I left the institution with only the paperwork that held me in prison. They didn't give me nothing.”

Dunn spent one year in jail and 33 years in prison. On July 22, St. Louis Circuit Court Judge Jason Sengheiser overturned his conviction, stating that, "in light of the new evidence, no juror, acting reasonably, would have voted to find Dunn guilty of these crimes beyond a reasonable doubt."

Despite this, Missouri Attorney General Bailey appealed the ruling, and the Missouri Supreme Court paused Dunn's release during the appeal process. This week, the court lifted the emergency stay, and St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore dismissed Dunn's criminal charges.
