5 Reasons Why We Love H.E.R.

The singer won Best R&B/Soul Female Artist at last year's 'Soul Train Awards'.

Gabi Wilson, better known by her stage moniker H.E.R., is one of the hardest working women in the industry. At just 24-years-old she’s already won four Grammys, including one for “Song of the Year” in 2020.

In addition to her prestigious wins, the singer-songwriter recently nabbed herself a Oscar win for “Best Original Song” in the film, Judas and the Black Messiah--putting her already at the half-way mark of becoming an EGOT member (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony).

There’s so many things that could be said about the Soul Train Awards’ 2020 Best R&B/Soul Female Artist. So, in honor of the upcoming event, we compiled a list of reasons why we love H.E.R. Check it out below.

For the earlier part of her career many people didn’t know the face behind the songstress who gave us deep R&B cuts like “Losing” and  soulful tracks like “Best Part” featuring Daniel Caesar. The reason behind her mystery lies in the fact that H.E.R. wants fans to focus less on aesthetics and more on her music.

The California native knew at an early age that her passion was in music.

At just 10, she covered Alicia Keys’s “If I Ain’t Got You” on the Today Show. Two years later she was one of five finalists in a radio show contest, hosted by Radio Disney. Though the burgeoning star lost, at age 14 she obtained her first record deal with Sony.

  • She’s Dedicated To Learning

The singer-songwriter has several tricks up her sleeve that help her stay ahead of her music class, including learning and effortlessly playing five different instruments, including the piano, drums, and guitar.

“Playing guitar is part of who I am, since I was a kid,”  she told Rolling Stone.

“I remember watching a video of Lenny Kravitz and Prince when I was a kid. That video changed my life—it made me want to play guitar just because of how rock star it is.”
