Did Diddy Almost Make Cassie A Member Of This R&B Group?
If there's one thing Diddy is most known for, it's being able to spot talent. He's the man behind Craig Mack, Biggie, Faith Evans, and Mase, just to name a few. In the early 2000's, he signed Yung Joc & Cassie, after a few setbacks. Then, the Bad Boy mogul practically invented music reality shows with Making The Band. Danity Kane, his all-female R&B/pop group, became the label's first artists to have a chart topping album since the Bad Boys II soundtrack and Puff went onto to sign all-male R&B group, Day26.
Danity Kane consisted of Aubrey O'Day, Aundrea Fimbres, Shannon Bex, Dawn Richard and D. Woods. After their dissolution in 2009, that unfolded on national television, he kept Dawn, brought on Kalenna Harper and formed Diddy-Dirty Money.
Dirty Money disbanded in 2011 and Dawn promptly launched solo career.
Since then, each DK member dived deep into their solo endeavors, but reunited in 2013 to form DK3: Aubrey, Shannon and Dawn. The good times were short-lived after Dawn and Aubrey got into an altercation at a recording studio. Dumblonde was created shortly after with the remaining members.
This past summer, DK3 announced their reunion tour and sat with Cosmo to discuss the rise, fall and reunion of their once-highly successful girl group. While reflecting on their lack of control and power within the group, Dawn recounted the story of record exec Jimmy Iovine asking Puff, "Why don't you have two light-skinned girls? This girls are too ugly. I don't get it," in reference to her time in Dirty Money.
Kalenna was reached out to for a comment and name-dropped labelmate, Cassie
Apparently, she "heard through the grapevine that Puff was being asked why he didn't use Cassie..." His reasoning was he "insisted the sound match the look."
Yikes... This could be taken as shade towards his now-ex girlfriend, but guess this is why you don't mix business with pleasure.
