Drake Gives the Rundown on What a Time to Be Alive
They dropped a joint mixtape –– just in time for cuffin' season –– after taking fans on a very emotional will-they-won't-they? rollercoaster ride.
Respectfully, the fans made it emotional for ourselves (impatient). But with good reason. Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late was a mixtape phenomenon, and Future's a chart-topping MC in his own right.
On a special airing of his OVO Sounds Radio today, Drake explained how the two paired up and deliverd.
"I went to Atlanta for six days a couple of weeks ago," the 6 god said, "in the hopes of doing some songs with Future."
That's around when word got out that they were in the studio together. They both, individually, have upcoming albums in the works, so it was probably the trolly ones who encouraged an entire project. Or rather, it was Future's work ethic.
"It's like a vortex," Drizzy said. "That guy could probably outwork anybody right now. ... It's tough to see somebody make four, five songs a night and not want to match it."
What eventually came out is an 11-track tape known as What A Time to Be Alive, named so by cultural connoissuer Ernest Baker, ripe with production by Metro Boomin', and anchored by a Noah "40" Shebib-produced freestyle that finds Drake at his best and most boastful: "The pen is working, if you n***as need some ghost lines."
Future weighs in on the other tracks to fill out the concept, his auto-tuned flow making Drake's numerous sports references and lifestyle nods ("I just came from somewhere where I ate for dinner seared scallops) even more strip club-ready.
To celebrate, Drake dropped the full tape on the show Sunday (which also happens to be his dad's birthday) and so far, the team thinks it's the best thing since Wonder Bread (see tweets and tracklisting below).
As for what the fans think, What A Time To Be Alive is available, as of 8 p.m.
