Breakthrough artist Latto fought back the tears as she graciously accepted her “Best New Artist” award at the BET Awards 2022, hosted by Taraji P. Henson. “It’s giving boss b-tch!” The rapper said to the crowd before thanking God, her mom, and her team as she fought back tears. “It’s giving pro-choice. It’s never giving a man policing my body,” she added.
Later the Atlanta-based emcee took to the stage for a fiery performance of her latest single “It’s Givin’” and “Big Energy” with a special surprise appearance from remix collaborator and Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Mariah Carey. In honor of her big win and even more spectacular performance featuring Mariah, check out these five records you should know from this year’s “Best New Artist” winner, Latto.
“B-tch From Da Souf” (Remix)
Latto released her debut Bankroll Got It-produced single “B-tch From da Souf” in January 2019. The uptempo female empowerment anthem became an instant hit. Later that December, she enlisted fellow female emcees Saweetie and Trina for a remix which served as the lead single from her debut studio album, Queen of Da Souf. The song peaked at number 37 on Billboard’s Hot R&B / Hip Hop Songs.
“Big Energy”
Latto initially released “Big Energy,” which samples the iconic 1981 single “Genius of Love” from Tom Tom Club as the lead track from her sophomore studio album 777. The highly recognizable song was also used in Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy.” During this year’s ceremony, Latto surprised viewers during her performance of the record when she brought out the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter for their collaborative remix, which debuted last March.
“Muwop” Feat. Gucci Mane
Latto’s 2020 single “Muwop,” featuring rapper Gucci Mane and samples the Atlanta native’s “Freaky Girl,” served as the second from the female emcee’s debut studio album Queen of Da Souf. The song peaked at number four on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and number 40 on Billboard’s R&B / Hip Hop Songs chart.
