Parents of Jordan Davis: Justice for Jordan Will Be Justice for Trayvon
The parents of Jordan Davis said that seeking justice for their son would also mean justice for Trayvon Martin, Sandy Hook and other victims of gun violence, during an interview with Good Morning America on Wednesday.
Robin Roberts asked Lucia McBath, Ronald Davis and the family's lawyer John M. Phillips their thoughts on the Saturday mistrial verdict in the Michael Dunn case. The family believes the jury and prosecutors did their best to present the case but pointed to "Stand Your Ground" laws as to why the jury did not convict Dunn of murder.
"Even though the defense, they don’t actually file for 'stand your ground,' it's in the instruction for self-defense and that confuses jurors. These people were torn because of the jury instruction," Davis said.
He said later that he is not relying on the court system for ultimate justice. "Justice on earth is one justice but always look to God to be the ultimate justice," he continued. Jordan's mother added that justice for Davis would not come until these laws are reformed.
"Justice for Jordan would be ultimately when we change the laws because that will be, not just justice for Jordan...[but] justice for Trayvon and justice for all the children at Sandy Hook and justice for Aurora and justice for Virginia Tech and the Navy Yard," she said. "It will be justice for everyone that has suffered because of these laws and will continue to suffer."
Davis's father said that justice for him would be to see Dunn convicted. "I want Michael Dunn to be tried and found guilty of killing my son, letting him know that it was wrong to kill my unarmed 17-year-old," he said.
Prosecutors are seeking a new trial of first-degree murder for Michael Dunn, who shot and killed Davis outside a convenience store in November 2012.
