Terry Crew Recalls ‘Superstar’ TV Son Tyler James Williams in New Essay
Terry Crews is having a proud television dad moment.
The “America’s Got Talent” host recently paid recognition to his former small-screen son Tyler James Williams, after the star was named one of this year’s TIME 100 Next honorees.
Every recipient receives a dedication penned by colleagues in the industry. For the tribute, Crews contributed an essay recounting his experiences working with 13-year-old Williams on “Everybody Hates Chris.”
Crews admitted he was initially nervous about taking on the role of Julius on the hit series based on the life of comedian Chris Rock, as he had been warned that “the biggest obstacles on set were kids and animals.” However, he knew whoever was cast to play a version of the veteran comedian “would need to be a superstar.”
“Then we had our first scenes together,” Crews wrote. “Tyler delivered his lines effortlessly, his comedic instincts razor-sharp. And when he was done working, he broke out into a big, beautiful smile.” Crews shared that he wasn’t shocked by Williams’ resurgence and increased success.
“That Tyler has grown into a brilliant talent is no surprise," the “White Chicks” actor continued. "I ran into him last year and told him how proud and thankful I am to have worked with someone who, at such a young age, carried the show. He gave me that smile.”
The actor wrapped up his essay, noting, “There’s nothing harder than going from child star to adult star, but Tyler has always been comfortable with himself, and it’s why he’ll continue to shine.”
Since appearing on “Everybody Hates Chris,” Williams has gone on to star in several projects, including “Dear White People,” “The Walking Dead,” and more. He’s earned several awards, including a Golden Globe Award and two Emmy nominations for his performance as Gregory Eddie on the critically acclaimed series “Abbott Elementary.”
