WNBA Suspends Brittney Griner, Wife Glory Johnson Over Domestic Violence Incident

All-Stars will sit seven games without pay for 2015 season.

It's been a whirlwind of three and a half weeks for Brittney Griner and wife Glory Johnson.

After the WNBA stars were arrested late last month for assaulting each other in a domestic-violence incident, they got married in Phoenix last Friday, May 8.

Exactly one week later on Friday, May 15, comes the news that the WNBA has suspended both Griner and Johnson for seven games without pay for the 2015 season, stemming from their arrests, as reported by USA TODAY Sports.

This comes after the WNBA investigated their late-April incident and released the following media statement about their findings by league president Laurel Richie:

“The confrontation escalated to include wrestling, punches, and the throwing and swinging of various objects. [Griner] received a bite wound on her finger and scratches on her wrist, and Glory received a scratch above her lip and was diagnosed with a concussion.”

Both Griner and Johnson issued separate apologies after the domestic-violence incident. Griner was ordered to complete 26 weeks of domestic-violence counseling as well, while Johnson’s case is still pending. Richie reportedly consulted NBA commissioner Adam Silver making the ruling.

“We recognize that our league has an obligation and an opportunity to set an example for people around the world, and we will continue doing everything we can to ensure that situations such as this do not happen again,” Richie added in her statement to the press.

The 24-year-old Griner, who led the Phoenix Mercury to the WNBA championship last season, is regarded as arguably the best women's basketball player. Johnson, also 24, is a fellow two-time WNBA All-Star for the Tulsa Shock
