Jordan Chiles is Bringing Black Girl Magic to the Paris Olympics

After winning a silver medal in 2020, the energetic phenom is aiming to win her first gold medal.

Jordan Chiles is the personification of Black Girl Magic. Born in Tualatin, Oregon, and raised in Vancouver, Washington, she’s been a member of the United States women's national gymnastics team since 2013.

In her illustrious career, she won a silver medal in the team event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and was a member of the team that won gold at the 2022 World Championships. As an individual performer, Chiles won the silver at the  2022 World Championship in the vault, and a silver medal in floor exercises.

At the 2024 Olympic trials, Chiles was named to the Olympic team where she will be looking to win her first gold medal after scoring a 14.200 on the floor exercise, a routine where she completed “a sky-high, full-twisting double layout in her first tumbling pass.” The score was her highest in the event this year.

Chiles spoke with BET.com about how Black gymnasts are redefining a sport that historically has had predominantly white athletes.

“It's okay to show up with spunk and it's okay to show up and give the talent that you have and put it out into the world. So being a part of that and knowing that these last few cycles have been dominated by Black women I think it's giving a different, like perspective on what it's like in life,” Chiles said.

“Being a part of that makes me so proud because yet when I was younger, I didn't get to see a lot of Black gymnasts. I didn't get to see you girls who looked like me. I didn't grow up in that at all,” she continued. “So knowing that I can be a part of that and letting the younger generation see that is a whole different story."

Along with Chilies, Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera will compete in Paris, while Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong will travel with the team as alternates. The team has been described as the most experienced team that the US has ever sent to the Olympics. She shared her excitement about being a part of the team.

“All I can say is that it’s going to be black Girl Power everywhere,” Chiles laughed. “Being a part of this era where there are so many Black gymnasts is incredible. Not only are we women but we're beautiful women going out there dominating our sport. We’re doing everything that we need to do to make sure that the younger generation understands that it's okay to be who you are.”

As a result of her growing popularity, Chiles is a brand ambassador of Invisalign and spoke about her personal experience with the product.

“Invisalign has been amazing for me. I did have an issue with my smile when I was younger and I had braces, but they didn't fix what I wanted within myself because I felt like there was something missing. So with Invisalign, people typically ask me, is it time-consuming, what do you do when something happens when an attachment falls off or you lose a tray or something? All I have to do is pop my retainer in and I’m gone. At the end of my cycle of all my trays, they showed me what my teeth were gonna look like. And I was like, 'Wait a minute. I need this all along.'”

Although the Olympics are just a few weeks away, Chiles expressed how much she’s looking forward to arriving in Paris.

"A great Olympics looks like me going out hitting a four for four. So all four events, being consistent and just having fun. I'm all about having fun. I think that's the biggest thing that I've accomplished within my career is knowing that my sport doesn't have to be strict,” Chiles said. “We don’t have to look like we don't want to be there. So I just like to have fun and I want to go out there and just enjoy every moment. I want to be like 'Okay, I've made it to the biggest stage of life and the whole world is watching.’ Hopefully, we can come back with some nice hardware and we can say that we came back with revenge and we did that for a reason.”
