Watch Hip-Hop Legends Talk the 'Luke Cage' Netflix Series
The premiere of the Netflix original series Luke Cage is literally right around the corner, and with the show set in Harlem, it was only right that some of the neighborhood's most iconic products weigh in on why their home turf is the perfect place for the superhero.
Speaking on the show's Harlem setting, A$AP Ferg said, "We got a superhero coming from Harlem. You get the feeling, you see the buildings. You might see somebody you know walking in the street if you are from Harlem."
In comparison to other Marvel superheroes, this is pretty special. "You wouldn’t see Captain America or Iron Man or Thor in the projects, in Hell’s Kitchen, places of that nature where you would find a Daredevil or a Jessica Jones or a Luke Cage," Method Man added.
Popular Harlem style icon Dapper Dan even explained just why the neighborhood is the perfect place for such an authentically Black character.
"The generation in Harlem that I grew up in [was] the first generation and these were the strongest people from the South," he said. "That’s what made Harlem. They got their own beauty salons. They got their own clubs. They got everything. Everything was right there for us."
So, why is the series' Harlem roots so impressive? It strikes the perfect balance: "It’s all these things wrapped up into one," Dan said. "Black culture, politics and crime."
