Black College Scholarship Named In Honor Of Late Atlanta Anchor Jovita Moore
A scholarship has been established to honor the legacy of the late WSB-TV news anchor Jovita Moore, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Created by the Jaguar Foundation of Atlanta, the first Jovita Moore HBCU Undergraduate Scholarship Award was given out during the organization's 14th annual Atlanta Achievement Awards in Atlanta on Sunday night (August 6). From 2010-2021, Moore had been the emcee of the event.
Moore's family presented the scholarship to Aliyah Beal, the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.
“I’m just really honored to be the first recipient of this scholarship, just seeing her involvement in metro right there it really just impacted me,” Beal said.
Beal will matriculate at Southern University where she plans to study Business Economics.
An acclaimed journalist and a native New Yorker, Moore adopted the city of Atlanta as her hometown. During her time at WSB-TV, she earned several Emmy Awards and in 2017 the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Southeast Chapter inducted her into its Silver Circle, one of the organization’s highest honors. Before joining WSB, Moore worked on the air at WMC-TV in Memphis and KFSM in Fayetteville and Fort Smith, Ark.
Moore was a graduate of Bennington College in Vermont and earned a master of science degree in broadcast journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York.
Throughout her career, Moore was also an active member of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists.
In October 2021, Moore, 53, died after succumbing to glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The mission of the Jaguar Foundation of Atlanta, Inc. is to “mentor, inspire and financially support Atlanta area students through scholarships to attend Southern University A&M College, and other selected accredited HBCU institutions (Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse, and Spelman Colleges).”
