VP Kamala Harris to Host Hip Hop 50th Celebration
Vice President Kamala Harris is showcasing her well-known love for hip-hop by hosting a special event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the culture.
The event will take place tonight, Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Naval Observatory.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the vice president is partnering with the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation Urban for Saturday's commemoration. Common, MC Lyte, Jeezy, Roxanne Shante, and more will participate, and nearly 20 acts will perform.
The celebration is the first of its kind with a gathering of cultural leaders at the official vice presidential residence. More than 400 guests — including musicians, artists, industry leaders and cultural trailblazers — are expected to attend.
The event has been coordinated in conjunction with The Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation. The Black Music Collective was founded in 2020 by a group of notable Black music creators and professionals who aim to amplify Black voices within the Academy and the larger music community.
In a statement, Harvey Mason Jr., president and CEO of the Recording Academy said the was a special moment to celebrate hip-hop.
“The Recording Academy and the Black Music Collective have had a tremendous year paying tribute to and honoring the legacy of Hip-Hop in its milestone 50th year,” said Mason Jr. “Taking the celebration to our nation’s capital alongside Vice President Harris is truly something special and I look forward to a historic day.”
Vice President Harris is scheduled to speak at the event about hip-hop’s profound impact on American culture and how the genre has reached people around the world. She will also highlight other achievements to support the arts by the Biden-Harris Administration.
