Jason Pierre-Paul Burns Hand in Fireworks Injury
New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul should have stuck with sparklers.
The Big Blue star was hospitalized over the weekend after burning his hand with fireworks during a Fourth of July celebration in South Florida. And he seems to have been burned out of a lucrative contract extension too.
ESPN is reporting that Pierre-Paul was severely burned on his palm and the tips of three fingers, including one being tested for nerve damage. Although doctors believe that Pierre-Paul didn't suffer any permanent damage, his injury has affected his current status with the team.
According to NFL.com, the Giants pulled their prepared long-term, $60 million offer to Pierre-Paul after learning of his injury.
Before the incident, the former first-round pick was already operating without a contract. The Giants used their franchise tag on the Pro Bowler and he still hasn't signed his $14.8 million tender.
According to NFL rules, the Giants and Pierre-Paul will have until next Wednesday, July 15, to negotiate a long-term deal. If they don't reach an agreement, Pierre-Paul would be locked into the $14.8 million for 2015 or could even wind up being released.
Pierre-Paul had 12.5 sacks and forced three fumbles in 16 games last season.
