Questlove Talks Super Group with Amy Winehouse, Mos Def and Raphael Saadiq
Losing Amy Winehouse was a big enough blow to popular music by itself, but according to Questlove, the soul singer's passing brought an end to another potentially glorious music act — a super group consisting of Winehouse, Questlove, Mos Def (the rapper now known as Yasiin Bey) and Raphael Saadiq.
"We spent a lot of time on Skype talking about crazy ideas and she schooled me about Sarah Vaughan," Questo recalled in an interview with CBS News. "I schooled her about J Dilla. And she was like, 'All right, we're going to start a super group. You, me, Mos [Def] and Raphael Saadiq.'"
Questlove said that he and Winehouse would indulge each other's considerable music obsessions and that he was open to the cross-genre collaboration.
"I was like, 'OK.' And she assigned homework: 'All right, study this record,'" he recalled. "I really miss not having her here to school me on jazz; I thought I was a music snob, and I thought I had my doctorate in jazz, but no. There's so much more I could have learned. She's a teacher."
Winehouse died suddenly of alcohol poisoning last July. A posthumous collection of unreleased songs, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, was released in December.
