LAPD Officer Sues City for Racial Harassment

Officer Earl Wright is suing the LAPD for racial harassment by supervisors.

Earl Wright, a Black LAPD officer, is suing the city of Los Angeles for racial harassment by his supervisors.

On more than one occasion, Wright was a target of "watermelon" and "chicken" jokes and was called the n-word. Wright has not made any comments to the press as of yet but court documents reveal further details of his mistreatment in the police department.

Fox LA reports

Some examples from the court documents we obtained:

— Wright says he once called his supervisor needing to leave early only to have him ask, "Why? Do you need to go pick watermelon?"

— He says that when he was called into the station house back in 2009 to receive a cake to celebrate his 20 years with the department, it was topped with fried chicken and a slice of watermelon.

— There were photos of him manipulated with what he said were racist captions, including one calling him ''the last Jackson." Another was captioned ''The Soul Glow."

— There were references to the N-word.

— There was a mock up of an ad for the old TV show "Sanford and Son" with his picture pasted onto it, he alleges.

You get the idea.

It's just jaw-dropping reading and there's really no reason to think he would make this stuff up, and the docs filed with court has the evidence, in terms of copies of the photos to back up his claims.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck says the department will be interviewing 500 officers to uncover their views and attitudes on racism as a result of the Christopher Dorner case, according to CBS Los Angeles

“Have they experienced it? In what context did they experience it? They think it’s part of the discipline system? Do they think it’s part of assignment? Do they think it’s part of the rotation system?” Beck explained.
